In partnership with the Washington Capitals’ Street Caps program, we offer a fun and accessible way for kids to get involved in hockey—without the high cost of traditional equipment. Ball or Street hockey is played off the ice using a ball and plastic or regular hockey sticks, making it an easy and affordable entry point into the sport. Powhatan Ice Den will host Ball Hockey programs throughout the 2026 summer for kids of all ages with the full Street Caps program launching in summer 2027.

Our Learn-to-Skate program will offer pathways for both youth and adults who want to develop strong, confident ice skating skills. We are building a program centered on a positive, supportive environment where skaters can develop confidence in ice skating and work toward their individual goals—whether that’s skating for fun, playing hockey, or pursuing figure skating. *Learn-to-Skate is the primary entry point into all ice sports and serves as a required foundation for our Learn-to-Play Hockey programs.

Our Learn-to-Play Hockey program introduces new players to the game in a fun, structured environment and serves as the next step after Learn-to-Skate.
Typically offered in the fall, winter, and spring at Powhatan Ice Den. The 2026 lineup for the Adult Clinics is in the works.

The Polar Mites co-ed program is designed for young players ready to take the next step in their hockey development. This in-house hockey program is ideal for participants ages 5–8 who have successfully completed Learn-to-Skate and the Learn-to-Play programs. Practices focus on foundational hockey skills like skating, puck control, passing, and shooting; all taught in a fun, age-appropriate environment that emphasizes confidence, teamwork, and a love for the game. 6U is run entirely out of Powhatan Ice Den and 8U will be out of Richmond Ice Box and Powhatan Ice Den. Both age groups have the opportunity for jamborees and tournaments.

The Mischief Program is the girls youth hockey program under the umbrella of Richmond Hockey Club.
For the 2026-2027 season we are offering a 8U team.

Richmond Hockey Club will be implementing a new to the area small-ice model at the 10U level. We prioritize the long term development of our players, confidence, and enjoyment of the game. USA Hockey recommendations and independent research show that players develop skills faster and stay in the sport longer when the focus is on skill development through repetition, small-area games, and age appropriate competition rather than early travel and the use of full ice at this age level. Some clubs across the U.S. are transitioning to this 10U model, and Richmond Hockey Club is embracing this approach for the future of our players.

Hosted at Powhatan Ice Den 3v3 style:
A fast-paced supplemental program that accelerates player development by maximizing puck touches, game decisions, and competitive repetitions. Players develop creativity, confidence, speed of play, and game awareness while reinforcing habits that translate directly to full-ice hockey.

Our Travel Hockey program offers a competitive environment for players ages 12U through 18U who are ready to take the next step in their development. Teams will compete in the Chesapeake Bay Hockey League (CBHL). Tryouts are required for all travel teams to ensure balanced rosters and the best developmental fit for each player. The program emphasizes skill development, team play, accountability, and preparation for higher levels of hockey, while maintaining a positive, player-focused culture.
